Let me start off by saying Heavy Trip is the ultimate wet dream for any metal nerd alive. It’s a genuine metal comedy, which will fill your metal appetite from start to finish. If you loved This Is Spinal Tap, Fubar, Deathgasm, and even Heavy Metal Parking Lot, then get ready to add another classic to your collection of awesome Heavy Metal Movies.
I had the chance to check out Heavy Trip in Montreal at the annual Fantasia Film Festival, which kicks ass every single year. The film immediately sparked my interest as soon as I saw the title and poster artwork. In addition, my positive experience checking out Deathgasm three years ago helped fuel my desire to proceed to this screening. While I was definitely expecting something similar to Deathgasm minus all the gore, I wasn’t expecting the kind empathetic characters I got in Heavy Trip.
Without trying to spoil the entire film, Heavy Trip centers around four metal bandmates who just want to be heard at the hottest metal festival in Norway. Typically, they practice cover songs in a family-owned reindeer slaughterhouse. Things quickly shift gear after the band members decide to write their own brutal metal songs. Following a few failed attempts to bring something unique to the table, they get inspired by a malfunctioning reindeer meat processing machine, which drops a somewhat killer beat that leads the men to their first killer song. Best of all, they also form a band called Impaled Rektum. From this point on their metal trip to stardom begins. The journey includes the obvious, grave robbing, Viking heaven and a hilarious armed conflict between Finland and Norway.
If you’re thirsting for something refreshing in the metal scene, then make sure to check out Heavy Trip. It’s an outstanding new film that will keep you head banging up until the climax, which has the most memorable scene I’ve seen so far this year.
Horns way up for Heavy Trip!
