At Yell! Magazine, we’re pretty excited about the upcoming Riddick film. It’s great to see that the promo campaign is strong and in full swing, and today we’re sharing with you the first TV spot for the film.
It’s like 30 seconds of pure awesome, but judging from some of the YouTube comments, there are a lot of dissenters. Their claims are that it looks like a remake of the original film in the franchise, Pitch Black. There are certainly similarities, but this is a sequel, and given the limited success of the first two films (and the nearly 10 years since the last installment) there’s bound to be some overlap. However, Vin Diesel and David Twohy have been careful not to add elements that explain the first two films to new viewers while including flashback scenes that explain how Riddick has gotten here since the last film, The Chronicles of Riddick.
Collider.com reports that there are two more films planned, which will focus on Underverse and Furya. There are also more video game deals in the works. Diesel has also said that we’ll see a Twohy that we’ve never seen before. If this goes well, fans of the franchise should be very happy.
Riddick synopsis:
Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.
The film stars Vin Diesel, Karl Urban (Star Trek), Jordi Molla, Matt Nable (Killer Elite), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall), Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption), Conrad Pla (Immortals), Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto), and Nolan Funk (Aliens in America).
Riddick has been rated R and will see the light on September 6th.
