This is a strange beast, the Revolver Golden Gods Awards: an issue of Revolver cover it hit stands on May 24th and the winners have been announced, but the show doesn’t air until tonight, May 28th, on VH1 Classics.

At any rate, if you’re a fan of heavy metal, then you need to check out the Revolver Golden Gods Awards show to see the spectacle that these guys put on. It’s a who’s who of metal and a nice blend of old and new school. The 2011 show is only the third annual, yet it’s been embraced by the bands who make this such a remarkable genre of under-appreciated music.

The WWE’s Chris Jericho hosted this year’s show, which saw appearances from Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Rob Zombie, William Shatner (who knew, right?), Geezer Butler, Duff McKagan, Corey Taylor, Steve Jones, Dave Nevarro, Chino Moreno, Vinnie Paul, Scott Ian, David Coverdale, Steven Adler, Max Cavalera, Jamey Jasta, Taylor Momsen (we should be in jail), Mike Portnoy, Gilby Clarke, in addition to members of Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, Megadeth, Static-X, Dethklok, Fear Factory, Machine Head, We Are The Fallen, Murderdolls, Suicide Silence, and Winds of Plague.

For the MMA and UFC fans out there, Dan Hardy and Josh Barnett also attended the Revolver Golden Gods awards show.

Although we already know the winners (we’re not going to spoil it for you until after tonight, but if you really want to know, Google it), we’re still looking forward to seeing collaborative performance that include:
Avenged Sevenfold doing Pantera’s “Mouth for War” with Vinnie Paul and G’N’R’s “It’s So Easy” with Duff; Steve Jones and Corey Taylor with Loaded playing Judas Priest’s “Electric Eye”; Sebastian Bach with Asking Alexandria playing “Youth Gone Wild”; Scott Ian and Volbeat playing “I Only Want To Be With You” by Dusty Springfield; and a tribute to Black Flag that includes DevilDriver playing with Max Calavera, Jamey Jasta, and Mike Valley.

It might be anticlimatic with the results already known, but any self-respecting metal fan will be tuning into the Revolver Golden Gods awards show tonight.
