Following a back-and-forth brawl between two topheavyweights, Derrick Lewis’ future inside the Octagon is now a fuzzy one.
Lewis, who was riding a stellar six fight win streak was stopped by Mark Hunt in the fourth round of their main event bout at UFC Fight Night 110 in Auckland, New Zealand. Despite the loss, the win earned Lewis his second consecutive Fight of the Night bonus award and earned an extra $50,000, according to UFC officials after the event.
However, in the post-fight interview with MMA legend Brian Stan, Lewis surprisingly hinted at retirement after noting an injury he sustained to his lower back in 2011.
No, it’s my lower back, not my leg. My leg is good, yeah, it’s just a long-time time injury. I hurt it back in 2011, and it has just been hurting all week.
This was probably my last fight, you know. I’m getting married next week, and I don’t like putting my family through all of this so this would be my last fight. Most likely it’s my last fight in the UFC.
If this is it for Lewis, he will be truly remembered for his short but successful run in the UFC and dominating fighters such as Gabriel Gonzaga, Roy Nelson, and Travis Browne, just to name a small few.
