Rory MacDonald’s Next Fight Won’t Be For The Welterweight Belt

Rory MacDonald

After earning himself three consecutive wins inside the Octagon since his loss to Robbie Lawler in November 2013, Canadian-born Rory MacDonald was promised to be next in line at welterweight gold, but it now sounds like the “Red King” is going to have to wait a bit longer for that title shot.

According to a report by MMA Fighting, veteran journalist Ariel Helwani via UFC Tonight broke the news on Wednesday that MacDonald was informed by the UFC that he isn’t going to be fighting the champion next. Instead, it appears like the Zuffa-owned banner is eyeing an immediate trilogy fight between Lawler and former welterweight champion, Johny Hendrick. Since their rematch went to another decision earlier this month, the trilogy seems to be much more appealing for the UFC at the moment.

Although, MacDonald is most likely disappointed, he told UFC Tonight that it won’t get him down:

It’s all good, I’m just gonna light up whoever is next. Like always.

However, there’s no official word from the UFC yet if the trilogy is set in stone. We’ll let Yellers know as soon as we hear the announcement.
