Trooper Beer – Up The Irons

Who doesn’t love a good pint of beer? And who doesn’t like a good pint of beer that’s made by a heavy metal legend?

Last May, Iron Maiden untapped its Trooper Ale, intoxicating metal fans everywhere — well, at least in Britain. That is the sad truth at the moment; Trooper is only available in Britain right now. The good news, however, is that it’s taking off like a Tailgunner.

In the very short time that brewer Robinson has been making Trooper, they’ve produced over 1 million pints of it. With such a quick growth, this can only mean that the world needs to be conquered next, a sentiment shared by Oliver Robinson, managing director of Robinsons:

“This is a great showcase for our new brew house and demonstrates the sorts of volumes it is capable of producing. It’s very exciting to observe Trooper as it expands across Britain and then, we fully expect, internationally. It is easily the fastest-selling new beer Robinsons have ever had, and quite possibly anyone else too.”

Obviously, the beer takes its name from the classic Iron Maiden track. What’s not so obvious is how delicious it sounds. As described on

“Trooper is a premium British beer inspired by Iron Maiden and handcrafted at Robinsons brewery. Malt flavours and citric notes from a unique blend of Bobec, Goldings, and Cascade hops dominate this deep golden ale with a subtle hint of lemon.”

I have a suspicion that when products get endorsed by a band or celebrity they’re just lending their name to it. We all know that there are countless alcohol products emblazoned with the names of bands and celebrities, so it comes as a relief to know that Bruce Dickinson had a big hand in developing Trooper’s flavor profile.

“I’m a lifelong fan of traditional English ale; I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when we were asked to create our own beer. I have to say that I was very nervous: Robinsons are the only people I have had to audition for in 30 years. Their magic has been to create the alchemical wedding of flavour and texture that is Trooper. I love it.”

The idea of Trooper beer is very exciting, and I am going to make it my personal mission to try to get a sampler sent to me so that I can give you an honest review of the hops.
