From the opening primal scream, there’s no mistaking who this is. Phil Anselmo (Down, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, and the latest song streaming, “Bedridden,” is some brutal, violent, ear-raping, kick-ass .) has resurrected some of his former anger and puked his rage all over his latest album, Walk Through Exits Only. Actually, it’s
This is bullshit! I want to hear the whole god damn album now, but unfortunately, we all have to wait till July 16th for Walk Through Exits to drop.
Anselmo & The Illegals is rounded out by guitarist Marzi Montazeri, drummer Jose Manuel “Blue” Gonzales, and bassist Bennett Bartley. In the ’90s, Marzi recorded two demos with Anselmo for Superjoint Ritual, and in 2001 he debuted his debut solo album, The Need. In the underground, Marzi has been named a guitar hero for this generation, and I think his expertise shows on “Bedridden.” Bartley played with Anselmo on the War of the Gargantuas split. Actually, all of The Illegals played on that split and/or with Warbeast, so it’s no surprise that in and around 2010, Marzi, Jose, and Bennett joined Anselmo as The Illegals.
Anyway, “Bedridden” is some heavy shit, I love it, and I can’t get over that guitar sound or how good Anselmo sounds. It’s like a rebirth in anger.
