UFC 139: Shogun Rua and Dan Henderson

UFC 139: Shogun Rua and Dan Henderson

UFC 139 was overshadowed by the first-ever heavyweight title fight on FOX the weekend prior to the traditional UFC event on pay-per-view. It was Dan Henderson’s first fight in the Octagon since UFC 100 — remember, he defeated Michael Bisping with a knockout (punch) and a memorable fist to the face.

Memoirs of Hendo

Just to silence Bisping up for good, but that clearly didn’t work. Before Zuffa, LLC acquired STRIKEFORCE on March 14, 2011, Henderson held the light heavyweight title in STRIKEFORCE and successfully defeated, the legend, Fedor Emelianenko in a heavyweight bout. That was also Hendo’s last fight under the STRIKEFORCE contract, and Fedor immediately got cut after three consecutive loses.

Now moving on to the warrior Maurício “Shogun” Rua, who lost the light heavyweight title to the younger Jon Jones at UFC 128, earning Jones the youngest UFC champion in history. Since Rua was dethroned, he, like a champion, was to work his way back up to be the Number 1 contender in the division. Rua looked extremely sharp against Forrest Griffin six months after that fight, quickly defeating Griffin in the first round by knockout at 1:53. Rua was back, and was ready to face Dan Henderson.

It turned out to be an epic fight that night at UFC 139, and it was described by many as one of the greatest fights in UFC history. The back-and-forth action also earned both fighters Fight of the Night honors, possibly even bumping the Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva fight to Number 2. At UFC 139, Hendo easily won the first round, and nearly finished Rua in the third. Hendo, running out of gas by the fourth round, gave the opportunity to Rua to regain some momentum. Rua managed to return in the fourth in an amazing comeback, and won the last round in my opinion.

Dan Henderson took the overall victory by unanimous decision, and might face the winner of the fight between Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida on December 10th in Toronto since his fight with Shogun was never confirmed to be a Number 1 contender eliminator match. Sources also point that Rashad Evans might be the next fight for Hendo, but I’m sure we will hear more news in the upcoming weeks, or possibly months, because of the injuries he took from Shogun.

In the meantime, show support for Dan Henderson, and make sure you check out his Heart & Mind Walkout Tee from UFC 139 below.
