Over the course of the two-day festival 75,000 tickets were sold. Despite a significantly more solid heavy metal lineup on Day 2, 45,000 of those tickets were for Day 1. That’s the day Metallica performed. If you’ve been following us, then you know that the Parc Jean-Drapeau was packed yesterday.
By comparison, for Evenko’s sake, Osheaga, the other major music festival in Montreal (the hipster one, and you know how I feel about hipsters… and they don’t deserve The Replacements), drew in 45,000 on each day of their three-day event.
Essentially, the biggest heavy metal band in existence was needed to bring in the fans. It wasn’t by error either. Heavy Montreal has been pursuing Metallica for four years, and they finally landed the thrash pioneers.
So what happens when a metal band of Metallica’s caliber enters a venue whose surrounding community has been complaining about the “noise” produced at these festivals? Well, they turn it up, while the festival keeps everyone else’s dB down.
Also, the sound equipment and stage set-up is usually restricted to what the festival establishes, fans will be interested in knowing that Metallica had their own rigs set up. Yup, that’s what happens when you’re that big.
