Excellent! Bill & Ted 3 Details Revealed By Alex Winter

Any metalhead worth his or her salt in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s loved the self-satirizing movies featuring the idiotic, talentless, heavy metal-loving goofs Bill and Ted. Yes, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and, to a lesser degree, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey were so endearing that the world fell in love with the time-traveling San Dimas duo.

Here’s the proof:

In fact, until this very moment, I’d always thought that Bill & Ted’s had inspired the Saturday Night Live sketch “Wayne’s World,” which we all know went on to huge success with two films and launched Mike Meyers’ career. Thanks to some quick research, I’ve shattered my own assumptions since the first “Wayne’s World” sketch aired a year prior to Bill & Ted’s release.

But I will not be deterred as to the significance of Bill & Ted’s. It is of my opinion that Keanu Reeves’ Ted “Theodore” Logan led directly to his breakout role in Point Break. There, so without Bill & Ted’s, The Matrix would have been completely different. Additionally, Alex Winter’s Bill S. Preston, Esq. launched his career as a director, writer, and producer.

In an interview with Yahoo, Alex Winter divulged some details regarding the Bill & Ted’s 3 project. As it turns out there’s a script by original writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon that’s being ironed out, there are producers and financiers on board, and at this early stage Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) is in to produce.

So, what’s the premise of the script so far? Have Bill and Ted learned to play their instruments? Are Bill and Ted saving humanity with their Wyld Stallyns music? Winter explains:

[Bill and Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It’s really sweet and really fucking funny. But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: What if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up, and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?

Unfortunately, Winter also shared the fact that the idea of a Bill & Ted 3 was made public prematurely, before there was a script, in fact. This means that the movie is probably a couple of years away. To that end, we’ll keep you posted.

Until then,
Be Excellent to Each Other \m/
