Is The BioShock Movie Back On?

bioshock 2

There’s no doubt that a BioShock movie should kill it. So, it’s good news that the video game movie might actually be back on the table. But will it be worthwhile without an R rating?

There’s no definitive word yet on what the BioShock film may be rated, but concerns about the R rating Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) was going for were at least part of the reason the 2008 Universal Pictures project got canned. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) was then tasked to direct, but the project fell apart once again, this time at the hand of BioShock’s creative director, Ken Levine, who stated last year:

And so they brought another director in, and I didn’t really see the match there. Take-Two is one of those companies that gives a lot of trust to their creative people, and so they said to me, ‘If you want to kill it, Ken, kill it.’ And I killed it. Which was weird, having been a screenwriter going around begging to rewrite any script to being in a position where you’re killing a movie that you worked so much on… It was saying, ‘You know what? I don’t need to compromise.’ I had the [BioShock] world, and I didn’t what to see it done in a way I didn’t think was right.

Kotaku has offered up some evidence that a new BioShock project is at least in talks:

The BioShock movie might once again be a possible thing. Last month, Sony Pictures registered the domain names bioshock-movie.com, bioshock-movie.net, and bio-shock.net.

Note that Sony Pictures wasn’t involved with the previous attempt to bring BioShock to the big screen.

Kotaku has speculated that Levine may actually be attempting to draft the BioShock screenplay, since that’s what he was prior to being a game designer and has since returned to as he works on the script for the Logan’s Run remake.

Is BioShock a video game movie you want to see? Do you think an adaptation could do the game justice? Share your opinions in the comments section below.
