Terminator 5 – The Rumor Machine Is Sentient

The Terminator franchise is big business, and whenever there’s talk of a new installment we all get pretty excited. It’s just one of those universally loved stories, an epic battle between good and evil. And whenever news of something new that we all love, we tend to speculate, getting giddy about potential “what ifs” and angry about possible scenarios.

The Rock as principle cyborg?

So, with buzz about the forthcoming Terminator 5 reboot, it’s no surprise that rumors are surfacing like herpes. While the Examiner reported in early June that Dwayne Johnson was possibly up for the role of the Terminator machine sent back in time. If The Rock is the machine, where does that leave Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Arnold as a human?

One thing seems like it should be certain: Arnold shouldn’t be a machine in Terminator 5. At 65 years of age, Mr. Olympia is just too old for that. To that end, as MTV postured, Arnold needs to be human and he needs to serve as the likeness for the T-800 that he was in The Terminator (1984). If you watched the deleted scenes for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), then you know this was conceived of – badly. (Watch the clip at the top.)

Terminator 5 in the 1950s?

MTV also addressed the rumor of Terminator 5 taking place in the distant past, say the 1940s or 1950s. The idea being that the cyborg would be sent back to kill an earlier generation of the Connors in order to snuff out John Connor. I imagine this would mean that Arnold’s human character would exist back then. It would also be kinda super wicked if Arnold played Sarah Connor’s estranged father, someone she’d never met or was forced to forget due to some trauma endured in the ’50s (like a cyborg trying to kill you), who heroically defeats the cyborg Terminator.

There’s also a rumor that Terminator 5 could take place in the future.

Personally, I think they should take this thing all the way back to Nazi Germany and have a Terminator cyborg go after a Connor ancestor in that era, killing beaucoup Nazis along the way.

Either scenario is rife with potential loopholes and chronology errors. The writers will, undoubtedly, have to be very careful.
