There had to be a reason to re-explore the American Dream. The original film is such a perfect vehicle through which to test what, at that point, was the perfect American family, and so much of it was about taking stock of the American Dream and then trying to poke holes in it. [It was] about finding ways to explore the potential flaws in the veneer of the American Dream.
