PS4 Sales Figures Are In + A Troubleshooting Guide

The first-day sales figures are in for the PS4, and they’re quite good, but for whatever confounded reason without a leg to stand on I expected them to be better.

So, without beating around the bush, the PS4 sold 1 million units within the first 24 hours of its U.S. and Canadian release. With the November 29th release just around the corner, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton is predicting 3 million sales by year’s end. To push the boundaries even further, Sony is expecting 5 million sales by the end of its fiscal year in March 2014, after the February 22 launch in Japan.

To give you a bit of perspective, it took 2 weeks for the PS3 to reach 197,000 sales in the U.S. after its launch, and the Wii U also took 2 weeks to reach 425,000 sales in the U.S. as well.

As we reported yesterday, the PS4 launch hasn’t been squeeky clean. Today the problem has been given the monicker “the blue light of death.” Although Sony has made a troubleshooting guide available, the cause of the problem is still unknown. The issues could have something to do with TV compatibility, issues with the PS4 power supply, issues with the PS4 hard drive, or issues with other PS4 hardware.

If you’re seeing the blue light of death, Sony suggests turning off your PS4 completely and holding down the power button for at least seven seconds (until the system beeps twice), disconnecting your PS4 AC power cord from the electrical outlet, and checking for visibly damaged parts – this includes the system’s HDMI port, which has been the cause of a recent publicized issue. If none of that works, contact support.
