It sounds like Stockton bad boy Nick Diaz will face his worst nightmare in the following five years… not fighting at all in the UFC. Diaz’s hearing with the Nevada Athletic Commission for a failed UFC 183 drug test finally concluded on Monday with a shocking decision. The NAC officially suspended the American mixed martial artist for five years and also fined him $150,000 — 33-percent of his $500,000 UFC 183 fight purse. The suspension was passed unanimously at the hearing in Las Vegas and will be retroactive to fight night.
Commissioner Pat Lundvall said,
We had an athlete that came before us in 2007 and he promised, ‘I’m not going to do this ever again,’ Then we saw him again in 2012, and we know that he failed to show for a drug test then in 2009. We’re now in 2015, and it doesn’t appear that any of these proceedings have had an impact on the athlete, and it doesn’t appear that the athlete is afforded the respect that this commission and the opportunity and the privilege for him to fight in the state then affords.
Apparently, Diaz being a repeated offender didn’t help one bit, it was the main reasoning behind the severe punishment. Diaz’s attorney Lucas Middlebrook later informed ESPN that they plan to appeal the commission’s decision, referring the judgment as a “vendetta suspension.”
In the UFC 183 post-fight drug test, Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites.
