Evil Dead (2013) Review: More Fun Than A Hamster In A Wheel

Oh mah goodness gracious! It’s been so long! So long since I’ve dined on such a fine mess of cinematic depravity.

Horror fan or not, there’s a lot of apathy going around town in the directorial world. A lot of gimmicky “who-cares” pathos diluting what would be extravagant and memorable. In essence, there’re a ton of people out there who serve up bare-bones schlock and call it entertainment.

No effort. No soul.

No writing, really. Just gore.

But by great grandaddy’s cotton candy stand, Evil Dead‘s got what it takes.

Suspense, characterization, a plot that makes sense, homages to the original, proper deviations from the original, and a cast that’s finally not too dumb to live?

Evil Dead 2013
I’ll take 30cc right here, right now.

But Evil Dead’s not so much a remake as it is a re-imagining. There’s plenty here that takes a turn from the original. Some might have issues with that – but hey, let’s be objective here. As a stand-alone work, it works. Allow me to explain.

Four friends (played by Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, and Elizabeth Blackmore) head to a remote cabin to get away from the city as their pal Mia (Jane Levy) tries to get off the needle. She’s been shooting up smack something fierce, and the cold turkey approach just isn’t working out so well for her. When they stumble upon the Necronomicon in a basement stained with the remnants of rituals past, they awaken something sinister – something eeeevil. And dead.

Now, here’s the thing about remaking a flick like Evil Dead.

We’ve all seen it before. Teens flock to a remote cabin in the woods only to get their shit stabbed in some kind of otherworldly cluster-fudge? Yeah. Heard that one before.

We ruined movies like this, forever!

But in a case like this, you’ve gotta give it some perspective. This is a remake of the original Teens in a Cabin movie – it’s not like they’re gonna send them to outer space. In fact, that’s one of the main reasons why the original hasn’t aged very well.
