Rockstar Games Says They Turned Down Hollywood “Many Times” For A GTA Film

GTA Movie

Since GTA V is dropping very soon, the thought about a Grand Theft Auto film isn’t unrealistic to think because it’s a franchise that can easily be turned into a summer blockbuster, if the right creative minds are behind the project. However, Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser doesn’t find it appealing to turn the GTA video game series into a film franchise.

In fact, in a rare interview with the Guardian, Houser revealed that they have been approached a handful of times to create one, and money won’t lure them in.

We’ve been offered, many times, and it’s never appealed. The money’s never been close to be worth risking one’s crown jewels. Our small dabblings with Hollywood have always left us running back to games. The freedom we have to do what we want creatively is of enormous value.

In addition, Houser also revealed that they never figured out how to streamline GTA into a cinematic experience, which is another reason why a film hasn’t been created yet.

We didn’t make a GTA movie for a reason, and the choice was ours. We probably could have got most people to do it, but we had no interest in doing it. One of the points about GTA was, it was the first time where if you thought about moving it into cinema, you were condensing it, not expanding it. It wasn’t like how do you find all the things you put into the film? It was how do you streamline this into a cinematic experience? That’s something where we never figured out the answer to the question. It was something that didn’t exist in 50 different media. It was a game property, and that was something to cherish and not be embarrassed by.

GTA V is currently slated for release on September 17, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No official word yet if the game will be available for Windows PC.
