Day 2 at the Montreal Comiccon proved to be a whirlwind of fun and… a lot of tension. Arriving on the scene revealed a long, winding line that seemed to stretch on for days. And there were even some irate con-goers having fits on par with road rage (you’re not isolated in your car, people can see and hear you) demanding staff to tell them where to buy tickets. I don’t know how they did it, but the staff was able to cheerfully point the con-goer to the line, at which the goer states with utter frustration, “you gotta be (expletive) (expletive) me?”
As you may know, the Montreal Comiccon also hosts the Montreal Horrorfest, so the first thing I did this morning was attend a screening of the film The Harsh Light of Day. I’ll bring you a review shortly, but all I can say for now is that it was totally not what I expected from the trailer that I saw.
After that, it was an overwhelming stroll through the convention site. If I were epileptic, I’d probably would have had an incident. So much to see, so much to do. Judging from appearances, the 2013 Montreal Con is much larger than the 2012 one. It seems even the quality of the vendors’ wares has improved. One vendor that had some impressive tees, I love T-shirts, was Akumu Ink; they’re based in Montreal and run by Aldora and artist Joey, both of whom were running the booth and very pleasant to talk to. And the people… my god, I’m surprised the fire marshal wasn’t called there were so many people filling the not-so-narrow isles. And speaking of the people, there is infinitely more cosplay this year — Yay!
We also sat in on a cosplay panel featuring Jessica Nigri and Monika Lee. They’re totally hot, totally pervy, and geeky enough to make the biggest geeks give up their sweatpants. We’ll be trying to score an interview with Jessica on Day 3 — if that doesn’t work, maybe we’ll just try to score.
Another highlight of the day was chatting/interviewing The Ladies of The Evil Dead, Betsy Baker, Ellen Sandweiss, and Theresa Tilly. Extremely classy ladies who, for the most part, went on to pursue personal lives before re-entering entertainment. Now, in addition to making convention appearances, they’re continuing with their careers and have recently appeared in Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful and they have their own web series called Dangerous Women — indeed! Our final highlight for the day was a stop over at the Sony PS4 booth. While Driveclub, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and a couple others, we took the opportunity to play the PS4 exclusive game, Knack. Loads of fun and we’ll have more on that shortly as well.
