If you’re like me, you like watching metal musicians playing. I’m not talking about those fake performance videos in which the band plays to a “sold-out” crowd or in an abandoned warehouse. I’m talking about things like real concert footage and/or tight shots of the musician playing his/her respective instrument. The latter is the case here.
Rivers of Nihil make it look so damn easy in their recently posted performance demonstrationfeaturing guitarists Brody Uttley and Jon Kunz, as well as bassist Adam Biggs and drummer Ron Nelson tearing through “Rain Eater.” The track comes off their new album, The Conscious Seed of Light, which Rivers of Nihil will be promoting on a fall tour, into NJ Deathfest, and on their way to joining Dying Fetus for a week of shows through the Midwest/East Coast.
The Conscious Seed of Light was recorded in March of 2013 at Mana Recording Studios in Florida with famed metal producer/musician Erik Rutan. While it’s not necessarily a concept album traditionally speaking, Rivers of Nihil began this project with the idea that they would release four separate albums tied together with one common theme: each reflecting a particular season of a year. Bassist Adam Biggs elaborates:
The Conscious Seed of Light is intended to be representative of spring and explores various themes concerning new beginnings, growth, and an attachment to the natural world in a post-human Earth. Unlike some concept records, however, we wanted to allow each song to work on its own terms. Rather than have the songs rely on each other to move a specific story structure forward; they work within their own separate narratives, but ultimately serve the album’s broader concept.
