31 Days Of Scares – Day 11 – Creepy Classic Games For Halloween Night

No.3 Bloody Mary/Candyman

There are many variations to the origins of this game, or rather who Mary is. One is that she’s really Mary Queen of Scots from 16th century England. She participated in many plots, intrigues, and murder, and was ultimately executed in 1587. So, when and if you play this game, it’s her bloody corpse you see in the mirror. Another story says that Mary is Satan’s bride.

Personally, I always liked the version of this game presented in the 1992 film Candyman, starring Tony Todd.

Either way, participants go alone into a darkened room with a mirror. Look into the mirror, and either chant Bloody Mary or Candyman a certain number of times, usually anywhere from 3 to 100. Then they should see something that scares the crap out of them… or maybe they summon something that will kill them at a later time.

No.2 Ouija Board

Ouija Board

The last time I played with a Ouija Board was when I was 19 years old. Just me and two girls. It wasn’t even Halloween, and it wasn’t even at night. Sure, it was late in the afternoon in the dead of winter, so there was an eerie element to the task at hand, but none so eerie as what happened. I was skeptical about the powers of the Ouija Board, so I asked it some questions that I knew the girls didn’t know the answers to, and because I wanted the truth I didn’t “tamper” with the results. I asked what my mother’s maiden name was and some other detail about something or other. The Ouija Board answered both correctly. Freaky, right? Then we asked it to whom we were speaking. And the answer… Ted goddamn Bundy! Yeah, the serial killer. I haven’t played the “game” since.

The Ouija Board is legitimately scary, and it’ll be great fun for you and your friends on Halloween night — especially if you make contact with the other side.

No.1 Midnight Man

Apparently, this game is based on an ancient ritual that was used to summon a spirit called the Midnight Man. So, what did the Midnight Man do? The story goes that in pagan religions he punished those who broke the rules. Can you figure out what the game Midnight Man is about? That’s right, there are a set of rules to follow, and if you break them, expect a visit from the Midnight Man.

Here are the rules of Midnight Man

You will need:
Candles, paper and pencils, a wooden front door, salt, a pin needle, and all the lights in the house off

1. Everyone must write their names on a piece of paper. Use the needle to prick your finger and place a single drop of their blood onto the paper.
2. Everyone must place their piece of paper in front of the wooden front door.
3. Light a candle.
4. Knock on your front door exactly 22 times. (Note: The 22nd knock must happen at 12:00 a.m. or the ritual will not work.)
5. Open your door, blow out the candle, and close it. You have now summoned the Midnight Man. Immediately relight your candle
6. Your goal for the rest of the game is to survive the Midnight Man. Everyone who plays must walk around the house with their candle lit, avoiding the Midnight Man at all costs until 3:33 a.m., when the Midnight Man leaves. If your candle blows out on its own, it means the Midnight Man is near, and you have 10 seconds to relight your candle. If you fail to relight the candle within 10 seconds, you must surround yourself with a circle of salt and wait until 3:33 a.m. If you don’t surround yourself with salt in time, the Midnight Man will attack and you will have hallucinations of your worst fears until 3:33 a.m.

The Midnight Man is nearby if:
-Your candle blows out
-You suddenly get very cold
-You hear a low whisper
-You see a black humanoid figure within the darkness

-Don’t use someone else’s blood on your paper.
-Don’t stand in one spot until 3:33 a.m.
-Don’t fall asleep during the game.
-Don’t leave the house during the game.
-Don’t use a lighter or other light source in place of yor candle.
-Don’t turn the house lights on.
-Don’t provoke the Midnight Man.
