Welterweight Champion (24-2) has been accused for steroid use in the past by former opponents like B.J. Penn and . No ground-breaking news there. To this day, GSP hasn’t taken those allegations with a grain of salt, even if he passed 20 drug tests with flying colors in the UFC since 2004. The problem is that those allegations continue to plague him, and wants to put them in the ground for good. In fact, GSP at one point was ready to pay a hefty price out of his own pocket for additional VADA drug testing before UFC 167; he was even willing to pick up the tab for his opponent, Johny Hendricks (15-1). VADA is a private drug testing company that has occasionally featured GSP on its website.
Over the past few months, this situation between GSP and Hendricks has been talked about at large and Hendricks has made it clear in interviews that he didn’t want any involvement in it because he believes GSP “has a foot in the door with the VADA group.” Hendricks also made a strong argument when he said he doesn’t want his career to be in the hands of GSP in that case.
In the end, the entire effort that GSP made for pre-fight drug testing went south. Even UFC President Dana White thought it was a “little weird,” also saying that both of them looked stupid. With words like that coming out of the bosses mouth, it’s no surprise now that GSP is “very disappointed” with the company.
In a French interview with La Presse, he recently revealed his true frustration with the UFC, who he thought would support him in additional pre-fight drug testing:
The only thing is that I do not know if they are willing to support me. I thought they were ready to support me, but I was disappointed, very disappointed with this turn of events. There are things I can not say, [things] I do not want to get back to the UFC because it is my employer.
It sucks that a champion isn’t getting support from his organization, but a this point, he’s done all he can do. UFC 167: St-Pierre vs. Hendricks takes place on November 16, 2013, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
