UFC 167 is a little more than a month away, taking place on November 16, 2013, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. As the event scheduled to honor the ’s 20th anniversary, it should and does have a bout featuring the fighter who’s arguably the organization’s greatest fighter, (24-2 MMA, 18-2 UFC).
GSP is scheduled as the main event to defend his title against Johny Hendricks (15-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC). There’s a lot of talk and support for Hendricks on this one, and pundits are citing his wrestling and boxing abilities as grounds for this being GSP’s toughest fight to date. However, in the same breath these pundits say that GSP is a smarter fighter and will have the advantage there.
Jake Shields, who lost to GSP at UFC 129, has been vocal in his support for GSP at UFC 167. He’s gone on record with MMAJunkie.com saying that:
St-Pierre vs. Hendricks is a good figh. I think it’s a really exciting fight and one I want to watch. But ultimately, I think GSP is so good at what he does. He’s such a smart fighter… I think GSP will end up using his distance, range – his standup – and end up taking Hendricks down and wearing him down and winning a tough fight.
Of course Shields has his own reasons for supporting GSP since he wants to eventually fight him again for the title:
I want to fight for the title again. That’s why I’m fighting. This is a big fight, and you never really know where you’re at, but this would put me a lot closer.
So, where do you stand on St-Pierre vs. Hendricks? Who will emerge the champion?
