Canada Aims To Cripple Its Music Scene

On July 31, 2013, Canada enacted new rules that will require international touring bands to pay more to play within its borders. The fee was once reasonable, a one-time payment of $150. Now, holy crap, the fee is $425 per band member, per show! Fees this steep will do at least two things: One, smaller bands may choose not to tour Canada since they can’t afford such costs; two, fees will be diverted to concert goers as ticket prices increase.

The way I see it, smaller bands suffer enough, relying on merch sales at their shows for income because they make little to no revenue from album/song sales. This is incredibly unfair treatment by the Canadian Government, not only of the bands, but of the fans too since they will suffer by possibly not being able to see the bands they like or having to pay higher ticket prices.

This story has spread internationally, causing even Randy Blythe to chime in:

For some insane reason the Canadian government has decided to enact absolutely ridiculous fees for foreign touring acts to enter their country. To tell you the truth, this will not affect a band the size of lamb of god that much… But for smaller acts who wish to tour Canada, those just getting their start, this will make it absolutely impossible- smaller booking agents can’t afford $425 per band member per show to bring in acts from outside Canada.

I have absolutely no idea why they would do this, since touring bands already have to pay taxes out the wazoo in Canada anyway. Now they will not be able to come, the venues lose money, the fans don’t get to see shows, the businesses around the venues lose money, the government will get NO TAX instead of their normal cut from touring artists, & most important the music & arts scene suffers. WTF? It makes zero sense.
