It’s Thanksgiving, folks, which means it’s time to play nice for a day, and part of playing nice means giving thanks for something besides your awesome self. Here atwe’re thankful for a lot of things that happened in the past year. First and foremost, we’re thankful to you, our readers. We’re also thankful to be in the position to bring together the worlds of , , /sci-fi, games, and the subculture that goes with them all. These things should be under one roof, and we’re happy to be the house. We’d also like to thank all the people we work with at various labels and studios, the various PR representative and management companies, and…
Shit, did we just win a Grammy? So, before this gets any more sappy, let’s just get to it. We asked a couple of our esteemed team members to write about a few things from 2013 that they’re most thankful for.
There are a lot of things in 2013 to be thankful for, such as new consoles, summer tours and festivals, film festivals, the opportunity to meet and interview numerous bands and actors… the list goes on. But if I want to get more personal with things a little more tangible, then read on for three things I’m truly thankful for, as they relate to Yell! Magazine.
Of all the horror released in 2013, I’m most thankful for James Wan’s The Conjuring. It’s one of the few movies that have truly scared me, which, in my opinion, is kind of the purpose of a horror movie. Don’t get me wrong, I like the slasher and such too, but they don’t scare me the way a supernatural horror will. And through the years, since The Exorcist, there have been countless supernatural horrors claiming to be scary, but failed to live up to their promise. The Conjuring exceeded my expectations.
I’d have to say I’m thankful for the first solo effort from Phil Anselmo. Walk Through Exits Only by Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals just hits me in the gut with its power, anger, and aggression. It’s certainly one of the best albums I’d heard in a long time and seeing the band perform live was a real experience. I mean, the guy is a legend for Christ’s sake.
What am I thankful for this year? First there’s too many to really choose from, so I’m going to have to try to keep this list limited to just a few selections.
I’m thankful for both the Evil Dead and Carrie remakes. They were both by far the best horror remakes I’ve seen in a long time. Both stuck to the general concept of the originals and added a little Hollywood effects to put the cherry on top. A lot of key scenes for both were pulled from their respective originals and definitely helped make the films the top choices of the year.
I’m thankful for both Children of Bodom and Motorhead‘s new 2013 albums. Children of Bodom released Halo of Blood earlier this year and it was non-stop fierce guitar from start to finish. With blazing guitar and keyboard solos from Alexi and Janne, this album will definitely catch your attention. Motorhead is fucking Motorhead. You know every album is going to be as good as the last. I don’t think it’s even possible to be disappointed with a Motorhead album. Even while Lemmy was in and out of the hospital with health complications, they still managed to bring the balls-to-the-wall Aftershock to you, the fans.
I’m thankful for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. I’ve always been a huge fan of the AC series. I’ve literally played each game in order all the way through. It only makes sense, especially if the story is told through each game. It wouldn’t make sense to start in the middle, you would be confused. Being a pirate just makes you want to jump in a ship and sail the seven seas… no? Just me? Well, shit, I guess I’ll be a one man crew. ARRGH!
