UFC 158: GSP vs. Nick Diaz Presser Highlights [VIDEO]

The time will finally come for Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz to square off at UFC 158 in Montreal’s Bell Centre for the Welterweight Championship. Long-time UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre personally asked Dana White that his next fight be against his rival Diaz – which led to this champion vs. champion superfight that was long overdue.

Diaz was originally slated to face St-Pierre at UFC 137 and relinquished his STRIKEFORCE Welterweight Championship in the process, billing this fight as one between two promotional champions. However White was forced with no choice but to pull Diaz out of the fight due to his inability to make the press conference to promote the fight. Meanwhile St-Pierre sustained a serious injury, blowing his ACL and was replaced by Carlos Condit. Condit defeated Diaz for the interim championship and then succumbed to St-Pierre at UFC 154. Meanwhile Diaz was serving a year-long suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a failed drug test. This will be his first fight since his long absence while GSP fights for the second time in four months after being out of action for over eighteen months.

“We’re excited for this fight – this is a long time in the making”, expressed UFC President Dana White. “This is the fight Georges St-Pierre wanted…we couldn’t say no to Georges”.

After an unfortunate injury and a grueling fight with Condit, St-Pierre feels he is more than ready to fight in front of his home crowd once again.

“This is the fight that everyone wanted to (see), including Nick and I…we’re doing it”.

Although he has been on the shelf for a while as well, Diaz is eager to try and snatch the welterweight title away from the Canadian.

“I don’t feel like I’ve ever been able to make it 100% leading up to a fight, all these years, back-to-back”, said Diaz. “It’s nice to kind of heal up once in a while, take a step back and see what’s what”.

Tickets for UFC 158 go on sale this Saturday.
