Or: DON’T GO IN THE HOUSE! DON’T CLIMB UP THE STAIRS! DON’T LOOK IN THE CLOSET! WHY AM I SPEAKING IN ALL CAPS?
Favorite Horror Movie Of All Time: John Carpenter’s The Thing
Why: For me it’s the complete sense of isolation. In most horror movies, running away from the critter is always an option. Not so in The Thing. Running away will only ensure that you die as a Popsicle rather than as a beastie snack. Combine this with the rampant paranoia of a group of desperate men unable to trust one another and you end up with a movie that I watch religiously every single Halloween night.

Perhaps a lesser known choice than the one above, this is still a superior, albeit more psychological, pick. Part of the wave of awesome horror movies that flooded the Asian markets around the same time as Hideo Nakata’s immortal The Ring, Cure concerns a wave of serial killings perpetrated by a man who never commits the murders himself. Instead, through some strange power that is never fully explained or understood, he has the uncanny ability to make others do his bidding, always to gruesome ends. I like Cure because it features an all too human monster and an ending that is completely open to interpretation. Highly recommended.

If all you want are a few scares and loads of fun on Halloween, pop in Dog Soldiers and get ready for a rip-roaring, bloody and funny good time. Great movie for parties, especially the Halloween kind.
