Cevat Yerli, the founder, CEO, and President of Crytek had a brief chat with Videogamer.com about the look of Crysis 3 at a recent press tour for their upcoming first-person shooter. Yerli mainly talked about the technical evolution of the game, who said that they have maxed out the power of current-gen consoles such as the Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 for the game. Also stating “There is absolutely not even 1% left”.

“Crysis 3 is absolutely maxing out the consoles,” Yerli said. “There is absolutely not even 1 percent left. No game will ever look technically better than Crysis 3 on these consoles, flat out. Most games are not even anywhere near Crysis 2 technically. I’m not talking about art style–art is subjective–but the pure fact of what we have been cramming in with Crysis 2 on Xbox [360] and PlayStation [3], I’ve yet to see a game do that still today.”

According to Yerli, Crysis 3 will blow the lids off the Gears of War and Halo franchise in terms of the level of detail the game will offer on February 19, 2013, which he claims is far superior.

“Any day I will take a battle against Gears and Halo, whatever, the amount of data we put in and the detail level is far superior,” Yerli said. “With Crysis 3, we’re pushing that to another level, but the PC is just two levels beyond.”

Since most games still can’t even touch Crysis 2 techincally, I personally don’t have a hard time believing him and I’m confident that Crysis 3 will indeed raise the benchmark again for video game developers to reach in the future.

Anyhow, I’m curious to know your thoughts about this game, so don’t hesitate to drop us a comment below.

The recent report on a leaked document handled by an advertising agency that’s associated with Bungie’s upcoming title rumored “Destiny”, have been confirmed by the developer to be authentic details on the games story. According to Gamespot, the document describes Destiny as a “fun and accessible” game with a “deep, tangible and relatable” universe similar to the one in Star Wars. Since the leak of the games plot, which came with a cool concept art pictured above, Bungie stated that they’re not ready to officially announce the new game yet, but to stick around because they have something staggering to show us soon.

Bungie also told IGN the following in regard of the early leak:

“We’re not quite ready to take the wraps off our next universe, but in light of recent events we thought we’d give fans something a little more official over at Bungie.net. Feel free to drop by and say hello! There’s much more to come.”

According to another report in May, documents suggest that Destiny will be released for the Xbox 360 in 2013, and the PlayStation 3 will get a release slated for 2014.

As you may already know, the game picks up 4 years after the ending of Halo 3 which, is also intended to be the first of a new trilogy in the series titled “Reclaimer”. Halo 4 also marks the return of Master Chief (John-117) as a playable protagonist for the first time since 2007. I’m sure our senior editor, Evil Argento, will be pissing himself of joy after he reads the following piece of news.

Since Bungie officially handed the torch over to a new video game developer under the roof of Microsoft back in March. Frank O’Connor, the Development Director has been one of the core guys fueling the energy in the Halo franchise at 343 Industries stated in a recent conversation with Giant Bomb that Halo 4 is 99% complete, and that one of the things still left to do is clean up last minute bugs for the mega worldwide launch on November 6, 2012.

“It’s just sort of getting it in shape for certification and then manufacture,” O’Connor said. “And then just cleaning out last minute bugs and getting ready for launch.”

You might have heard, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary launched last week, along with the announcement for Halo 4’s Q4 2012 release date. This is all big news in the Halo community, especially since Halo 4 won’t be helmed by Bungie, but rather 343 Industries. For now, however, the more exciting news is the anniversary edition, which has upgraded the visual appearance of the original, in addition to such new aspects like achievements, terminals, and online play.

Whether by coincidence or calculation, the new Halo: Faith trailer launched (if you haven’t already, check it out above). The trailer is for the Halo: Faith short film, obviously, written and directed by Jared Pelletier. The trailer hints at some kind of government operation to find and train young kids to become Spartans, in the “Spartan-II Program, Eridanus II.”

From the incredible score to the stunning cinematography, everything about the Halo: Faith trailer is awesome and enticing and we here at Yell! Magazine cannot wait to see this in its entirety.

A few months ago we spoke to award-winning Canadian director Jared about Halo: Faith and Halo in general, and we were able to exclusively bring you the first screenshot. For now, because all we have is the trailer and the interview and no damn access to the short, we’re going to sit and watch said trailer again and read our interview. We hope you take the time to read our interview of these up-and-comers and learn more about the inception and creation of Halo: Faith.

Halo: Faith - Credit: Jared Pelletier (Click Picture To Enlarge)

Jared Pelletier, award-winning director at just 21 years of age, is vying for the director’s chair of the elusive Halo full-length feature with his short rendition, Halo: Faith, of the beloved video game franchise.

We sat down with the director, and student of entertainment law and business, to talk about Halo: Faith; Halo in general; a new, badass gun used by the Blue Spartan; and female Spartans. Now, if Jared combined Blue Spartans with female Spartans James Cameron might be interested… but we’ll settle for some of that Avatar technology being used in Halo: Faith.

Jared was also kind enough to let us show you the first screen shot of Halo: Faith. It’s a close shot and you can’t make much out, but Jared explains it in the interview. See it, read it, exclusively on Yell! Magazine.

1. Were you a big Halo fan prior to taking on this project?

I was probably more so back when I played the fist game; I was probably 11 or 12 at the time. I definitely wasn’t as into it as the cast and crew were, but I was always more into the story than into the game and I always thought that it would translate really well to the screen. So, about five months before we started shooting I started researching a lot; not so much playing the games as researching the whole history Bungie created and that got me back into the universe. Unfortunately, I haven’t really played any of the more recent games; I want to.

I like to approach it with a more objective point of view rather than as a fan of the game; I think some creative liberties had to be taken in places where, perhaps, more dedicated fans wouldn’t take those liberties.

I hope [a lot of people are looking forward to it], the pressure is definitely there, but that not only helps myself, but everyone who’s a part of it as well.

2. Is the short picking up where Halo 2 starts out?

I believe it’s more just before where the more recent one, Reach, begins. I wanted to start somewhere the games hadn’t really gone, and I wanted to start at the beginning of the war for the people who aren’t as familiar with the franchise, so it begins not really at the beginning of the war, but at the beginning of the first major Covenant offensive, so I guess it starts at the beginning of the war.

3. Is there no Master Chief in this?

There might be. Master Chief might make an appearance. We’ve been in talks with Steve Downes who voices him for the games.

4. And you’ve said that not everything from the game is going to make it into the film; does that include the Flood?

That does include the Flood, yes. We talked about it and that was actually one of the ideas, but I didn’t think it would be exactly what all the fans would want. It was in consideration, but, no, we’re not going that way.

Jared talks about a fear that he addressed in the making of Halo: Faith after the jump…

Gamers have an odd relationship with movies based on video games. On the one hand, the thought of some Hollywood ace adapting our beloved characters for the big screen should be cause for celebration. On the other, well, just try to mention Uwe Boll to any gamer and watch him foam at the mouth. And let me tell you, it’s not happy foaming. It’s pure, unbridled hatred and rage at how the jewels of the video game industry get treated by movie makers. When all you can do is point to 1995’s Mortal Kombat and say: “Yeah, that one wasn’t so bad,” you know there’s a significant dearth of quality movies based on video games.

The problem is twofold. Firstly, much like many of the comic book films, there is a general lack of respect from film makers toward the original material. Sure, the game is loved by millions, has mass appeal, sold like hotcakes, and has a well-established world and characters… but let’s ignore all of that in favor of our vision. After all, we’re artists, they’re just video game makers, what do they know? Secondly, out of all the games turned into movies thus far, roughly 95% had very little story to speak of. Mortal Kombat? Fighter histories and motivations does not a movie make. Super Mario Bros.? Mario needs to save Princess Peach. Simple, yet they still managed to fuck that up. Resident Evil? They got the action right, but this is not a franchise known for its witty banter.

However, these faults describe the previous generation of movies based on video games. Since video games have become more and more cinematic, the next generation promises to be something totally different. And, for a change, Hollywood is finally taking a stab at adapting video games with actual plots, massive amounts of dialogue, and fully-developed characters with histories that go beyond “bad guy killed my (insert significant other here) so I’m entering this martial arts tournament to get revenge” cliché.

So, my faithful readers*, without further ado, here is Yell! Magazine’s Top 10 List Of Movies Based On Video Games That Need To Be Made, along with rumors, castings, potential pitfalls, and all the reasons why these films would kick ass.

*Except for that one reader who totally cheated on me with IGN. You know who you are. Bastard.

No.10 Uncharted

The plot:

Wise-ass adventurer Nathan Drake goes hunting for fabulous treasures all around the world with his sidekick and beautiful love interest(s) in tow. Huge amounts of cliff-climbing, spelunking, and gunfights ensue. Fun is had by all.

Why it could work:

Nathan Drake is Indiana Jones. And people love Indy. Hell, they even loved geriatric Indy. Drake is an easy-going hero, flippant but loyal and brave to a fault. With the correct handsome leading man he’ll easily appeal to a large demographic. Toss in some tomb raiding, complete with a series of traps still well-oiled after hundreds of years for some reason, a plucky reporter tagging along for some romantic sparks, marinate with some explosions and a treasure that ends up having a supernatural component, shake well and voila! Blockbuster!

Why it might not work:

It’s all about the acting. Casting is going to be key for this movie. If you choose actors devoid of chemistry for the roles of Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher, people won’t buy into their relationship. Drake is a wiseass with a heart of gold, imperfect casting would completely undermine the character’s charm.

Who should be involved:

Uncharted fans were in an uproar when Mark Wahlberg was announced as Nathan Drake a few months ago, soon followed by his “The Fighter” director David O. Russell. Online petitions were soon written up begging the studio to reconsider this. While Russell has the requisite action chops (Three Kings) to direct the movie, the dour, intense Wahlberg irked fans. Luckily, both men seem to have abandoned the project. In the minds of many fans, the perfect Nathan Drake would be Nathan Fillion. Not only does he resemble the character physically, but also his Captain Mal Reynolds on Firefly was essentially Nathan Drake… in space. A second possibility would be Josh Holloway from Lost, who might not look like the character but certainly possesses the right personality quirks required for the role.

Come on, Sony! They’re both named Nathan!

The potential:

A rip-roaring, summer action blockbuster capable of launching a movie franchise.
