Reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and bitter rival and No1 contender Chael Sonnen have long been known as two of the most colorful characters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization. But that has been taken to a whole new level in a special comic strip which will countdown to the UFC 148 main event between the two bitter rivals.

Each day another page of the strip will be published on the UFC’s Facebook page, leading to the biggest fight of the summer at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, on July 7.

The strip has been drawn by British artist Dave Golding, 37, a professional comic book artist since 2006. Golding was the original artist for the critically acclaimed Dare graphic novel ‘The Hunter’, which has recently been optioned by Hollywood, and his work has been featured throughout the medium as well as on designs for various science-fiction shows for British television.

The strip – which launched on Sunday on Facebook – will tell the story of this almost-inevitable rematch of the 2010 fight of the year, and is peppered with in-jokes long-time UFC fans will appreciate.

Golding has also re-imagined Silva – a lifelong comic book fan – and Sonnen as costumed heroes for two special faux comic book covers. Silva dons the tights as ‘the Silver Spider’ and wears an outfit featuring the colors of his beloved Brazil’s national flag. Sonnen, meanwhile, is taken at his word and has been transformed into the ‘American Gangsta’, and given a patriotic Old Glory color scheme.

Silva said:

“I’ve always been a comic book fan since I was young. I liked heroes who had everyday problems but still tried to help people.”

Sonnen said:

“What a thrill, to see myself in comic book form. Never before has a real life super-hero been turned into a mortal in a comic book, you will never see this in your lives again.”

Yell! Magazine review:

DC Comics’ Green Lantern attempts to shine bright and escape from its shelved existence. Helping to achieve this goal is Ryan Reynolds, who fits the role perfectly with his wit and charm plying the hero, Hal Jordan.

The movie starts with a quick exposition, the history of the ring and the Green Lantern Corps. Parallax is an entity of fear, the greatest threat to the green lanterns gaining his powers from the yellow energy of fear. He was imprisoned by one of their greatest heroes, but Parallax escapes and we are taken six months into the future. Parallax has killed a few lanterns and injured the one who defeated him, Abin Sur. As a result, Abin makes for Earth to pass on his ring to the new chosen bearer.

The story of our hero starts off when Hal Jordan, after a somewhat pretend dogfight against two unbeatable jet drones and some back story of daddy issues, is suddenly encased in green energy and taken to Abin Sur’s crash site, where he receives Abin’s ring. Though, the story starts off with some action, which is always a good thing, the rest of the movie felt like a jumble of back story and explanation all crammed in. Hal is whisked away from Earth and taken to planet OA for basic training (he also discovers that he is the first human to join the corps.). Hal learns about the green energy of will and how he can forge anything into existence, limited only by his imagination.

After a nice beating from Sinestro, played by Mark Strong, our hero keeps complaining how he is the wrong guy and how he is scared. He believes the ring has chosen the wrong guy, because the chosen should be without fear.

If the movie could have focused on one villain, it would have been better grounded. However, that’s not the case and we have a potential villain, Sinestro, who shows his dislike for Hal. We have a recruit of Parallax; scientist Hector Hammond, who becomes an evil psychic; and we have Parallax himself.

For a time, it seems that Hammond will take the big role as the primary bad guy, showing a bit of his daddy issues and an interest for Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), an interest that Hal shares. This buildup is destroyed because Hammond is just a pawn for Parallax.

As for the love interest of our hero, the story tries to build on Hal and Carol Ferris’ affections, but even this could have used more backbone. This may be due to the lack of good characterization. The cramming of story to give us the big picture and idea of the world of the lanterns left us with two dimensional characters. It was hard to have any feelings for any of them as the story just moved too quickly.

The CGI in Green Lantern could have been better, but it fit with the rest of the feel of the story. It served to push on to viewers the effect it needed, which was entertainment.

The ending and defeat of the main villain should have been much more difficult, as the battle’s climax left somethign to be desired. It seemed too easy, compared to how much more powerful Parallax was said to be.

The entertainment was well enough to keep a good hold, but enthralling or exciting it was not. Still, it served its purpose for a night out at the movies and one can leave the theater with feelings of having an enjoyable experience.

X-Men: First Class Review OR: Marvel’s Merry Mutants Make Movie Madness

Also, alliteration is awesome.

Many film buffs mistakenly believe that the current wave of comic book movies began with 2000’s X-Men. While the argument could be made that 1998’s Blade was the first modern comic book movie to return respectability to the genre in a post Batman&Robin world, it was Bryan Singer’s X-Men that conclusively proved that comic book movies could not only be financially profitable but well-acted and directed as well. Since then, Hollywood as produced an astounding number of properties based on their comic book counterparts and the flood shows no sign of stopping any time soon. This summer alone features the already released Thor, the upcoming Green Lantern and Captain America and the movie which is the subject of this review, X-Men: First Class.

First Class, the fifth entry in the X-Men movie series if one counts 2009’s Wolverine: Origins, is on shaky ground as far as its responsibility to the franchise is concerned. X-Men and its sequel X2: X-Men United are well regarded works of cinema, loved by both critics and fans alike. While 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, directed by fanboy lightning rod Brett Ratner, was the most commercially successful of the initial trilogy, its artistic merits were a matter of some debate. And the less said about poor Hugh Jackman’s attempt to make an R-rated character into a PG-13 movie in Wolverine:Origins the better. While the money kept pouring in, the fans were growing less and less enthusiastic with each installment.

The franchise needed a serious hit of adrenaline if it hoped to win back the multitude of fans getting ready to jump ship. Enter: Matthew Vaughn. Originally scheduled to direct The Last Stand when Bryan Singer left Wolverine and the gang to go direct Superman Returns, Vaughn had some minor issues with the studio executives and ended up leaving the project for greener pastures. He finally contributed an entry to the comic book genre with last year’s Kick-Ass, a faithful adaption of Mark Millar’s endlessly entertaining treatise on the nature of superheroes, thus easily establishing himself as a more than competent director of comic book action movies. But the question remains: Can Vaughn deliver the goods and restore the X-Men franchise to its former glory? Or does this mutant need to locked away somewhere secure where it can’t harm the general public?

Read on, my faithful lackeys, this is TheMatt’s review of X-Men: First Class, opening this Friday in theaters everywhere.

A few days ago, Activision with Marvel Entertainment announced Spider-Man: Edge of Time, and now Yell! Magazine has a few new screenshots to accompany the news. The new Spidey game is being developed by Beenox, who also worked on Shattered Dimensions, which is considered the best Spider-Man game to this day.

If you haven’t read the longer news bit, here is a simple little summary on what Spider-Man: Edge of Time is about. In this new game, Spider-Man will be challenged to save himself, and be forced to correct a timestream gone wrong. The player will be able to play as the Amazing Spider-Man in a contemporary environment, and play as Miguel O’Hara (known as Spider-Man 2099) who is set in a corrupted future. Time is against you, and the fate of Peter Parker hangs in between the actions of the two.

Browse through the screenshots above, and feel free to let us know your thoughts about Spider-Man: Edge of Time. The game will be available this fall on the PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

High-Octane, Adrenaline-Fueled Adventure Tasks Players with Saving Spider-Man This Fall

Activision and Marvel Entertainment announced yesterday Spider-Man: Edge of Time, where Spider-Man faces one of his greatest challenges ever — saving Spider-Man. Developed by Activision-owned studio Beenox, Spider-Man: Edge of Time challenges the player to take on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 to correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker.

“The first Spider-Man entry by Beenox, Spider-Man™: Shattered Dimensions, was touted as one of the wall-crawler’s best Spider-Man games to date from both critics and fans,” said Vicharin Vadakan, Director, Global Brand Management. “Beenox is once again taking a fresh and different approach to bring a fast-paced and high-octane adventure and unexpected story to life in Spider-Man: Edge of Time.”

“At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them,” said Dee Brown, Studio Head, Beenox. “We want to create a totally distinct experience in Spider-Man: Edge of Time by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance.”

Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a focused, action-packed adventure set in two connected and evolving timelines, from the contemporary times of the Amazing Spider-Man to the corrupted future world of Spider-Man 2099, against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran Peter David (co-creator of the comic book series Spider-Man 2099). The game features all-new “cause-and-effect” gameplay, where players will see how the immediate and sometimes unexpected effects of their actions as one Spider-Man changes the timeline of the other Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Edge of Time is slated for release this fall.

Attendees at WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco, CA, can get a sneak peek and learn more about the game on the Activision/Spider-Man panel on Saturday, April 2, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 103.

Wonder Woman, the iconic super-heroine of feminism, gets a makeover, a new face, and a fresh run at a new television series. While we all anxiously await the inevitable Justice League movie and the rest of the associated superheroes get their own movies, it seems Wonder Woman has, once again, been relegated to the small screen. The Wonder Woman TV movie is slated for sometime in 2011 and only went into preproduction on March 15, 2011 (NBC has picked up the pilot).

While most feminists we know wear combat boots and have spiked hair (yeah, we went there), the new Wonder Woman (played by Adrianne Palicki) has a new uniform and it’s sexy enough to be the envy of all the Latex/Fetish models at their next trade show/convention. As you can see from the picture of Palicki in our gallery, the new outfit includes a pair of blue, skin-tight pants (we would kill to be a part of the wardrobe team that helps her into that little number) and a red and gold bustier that does a a better job than a Wonder Bra in enhancing the young actress’ chest. If you can past all that, you’ll notice that the ever-present lasso of truth and indestructible bracelets are still a part of her uniform.

While there have been several attempts at bringing Wonder Woman to life, none have done exceptionally well. We hope you’ll join us in this tiny retrospective of the various incarnations of Wonder Woman – and tell us what you think in the comments section below. We might be thinking Adrianne Palicki might be hotter than Catwoman.

Ellie Wood Walker / Linda Harrison as Wonder Woman (1967)

Ellie Wood Walker/Linda Harrison played a straight-up “comedic” version of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman: Who’s Afraid of Diana Prince? back in 1967. This short film was written by the same team who wrote the popular ‘60s Batman television series. While Batman producer, William Dozier, commissioned this short to be made in the hopes that Warner Bros. would give him the green light to produce a pilot for Wonder Woman, his hopes were rightfully flushed.

Cathy Lee Crosby as Wonder Woman (1974)

In 1974, Cathy Lee Crosby brought the character to life in the made-for-television movie Wonder Woman. We’re not too sure what was so wonderful about this take on the Amazonian since she had no powers and had blond hair. It still got decent ratings at the time though.

Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman (1975)

Every boy in America discovered something about themselves when Lynda Carter took on the role back in 1975. To date, this has been the most successful and emblematic version of Wonder Woman, having a four-year run on television. Who could resist those blue eyes and those spinning transitions from Diana Prince to Wonder Woman? The storyline of this incarnation of Wonder Woman followed the origins portrayed in the comic book series more closely than any others.

Finally, in the late ‘90s there was a fourth attempt to bring Wonder Woman into everyone’s living room. This one was penned by the creator of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Deborah Joy LeVine. Obviously, it never happened.

Darren Aronofsky, one of Yell! Magazine’s favorite directors because of films like Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, and Black Swan, will be directing the upcoming Wolverine flick. Presently it’s in preproduction and scheduled for release sometime in 2012. Aronofsky announced last November that the film would simply be titled The Wolverine and would star Hugh Jackman.

The Wolverine will not be a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the Gavin Hood-directed film released back in 2009, but will be an adventure to the Land of the Rising Sun.

From the limited information coming from sources in Hollywood, the film seems to be an adaptation of the 1982 Marvel miniseries comics about Wolverine. At the time Wolverine was the most popular of the X-Men characters, so Chris Claremont (the writer of The Uncanny X-Men comic) and artist Frank Miller (the guy who brought us 300, Ronin, and Sin City) collaborated on a four-book limited series of Wolverine traveling to Japan.

The comic book follows Wolverine’s fight to regain possession of his lover, Mariko Yashida, whose father, Lord Shingen, forced her to marry another man. Eventually, Wolverine kills Lord Shingen, but not before being thrown into a world of assassins and secret organizations for which Japan’s history and culture is famous.

If the film does follow the story from the ’82 comic, which seems likely as Claremont is mentioned when Christopher McQuarrie’s script is talked about (IMDb lists Claremont in the writer category alongside McQuarrie), it should be a fucking blast to watch.

Wolverine versus sword-wielding ninja and samurai is a no-brainer for buzz creation. Let’s hope the film lives up the hype it will produce. With Aronofsky directing and Jackman starring, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

With Inception behind him, Christopher Nolan and team are in preproduction for the next Batman film (called The Dark Knight Rises) and details on cast members have been released in the last few weeks.

Christian Bale and Michael Caine are returning as Bruce Wayne and Alfred, respectively. Others who are returning, not surprisingly, include Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox) and Gary Oldman (Jim Gordon). It was also announced that Tom Hardy will join the cast as Bane, the venom-taking superhuman with the photographic memory.

But what got this guy’s attention was that Anne Hathaway will play the sexy Selina Kyle (aka, Catwoman). The filmography of Anne Hathaway shows her in two distinct roles. The first being the wholesome girl in films like The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted and the fucked-up bitch in films like Rachel Getting Married and Havoc. The former was easily believable, while the latter was not (even though I enjoyed the titty shots).

Catwoman is a tough character to play well; she is a mix of diabolical evil witch and flirty sexy bitch. Many have played the role (Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, and the original Julie Newmar), but only with moderate success. Will Hathaway be able to conjure up her inner kitty with claws? And do it in a way that gets the hairs on the back of our necks to stand up while simultaneously increasing the blood flow to our groins?

Hathaway is a good actress but has always had trouble shaking off her good-girl reputation that began her film career. If I was to guess, I think she will have difficulty. But if she can pull it off, then she might finally throw off the princess persona that she tried getting rid off with the roles of Allison Lang and Kym but failed. Either way, seeing Nolan’s third installment should be as enjoyable as the previous two.
