Boxing greats Gennady Golovkin, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya won’t be tuning in to watch the superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Dana White.in August. All three of them, who are currently promoting “GGG” vs. Canelo in September feel disrespected by President
Besides not being a fan of the mega crossover bout in general, De La Hoya also isn’t happy with the proximity of the dates. Mayweather vs. McGregor takes place three weeks after his highly-anticipated event.
De La Hoya said,
It was disrespectful, I would have thought that Dana White would have a little more respect with this boxing event taking place, because look, you just don’t do that. I mean, it’s like having the Super Bowl and then three weeks later the World Series takes place, the final game. It just doesn’t happen.
The former Mexican boxing champion in six different weight classes, previously voiced his displeasure of Mayweather vs. McGregor via Facebook, saying that boxing “might not ever recover” from the spectacle. De La Hoya believes they could have at least booked it in November or December.
Well we have the whole year to stage these types of big events. They could have maybe staged it in November or December but, look, it is what it is. We have a superfight here. We have a real fight, and that’s exactly what we’re focusing on.
“GGG” vs. Canelo is set for Sept. 16 at the same venue as McGregor-Mayweather: T-Mobile Arena. The mega crossover bout is slated for Aug. 26.
