This is what we like here at Yell! Magazine, a band that blends heavy metal with their passion for horror and sci-fi so perfectly that the best way to describe it is to say that it’s flawless. That pretty much sums up the duo Black Cobra.

But the horror/sci-fi element wasn’t the selling point for me to go find them on YouTube when I read the press release, but only because I hadn’t read that far yet. The selling point for me was, “Black Cobra has unloaded a deadly, damaging and wholly unique style of punk/hardcore-propelled sludge doom metal.” How could any fan of hard music resist that description?

Comprised of Jason Landrian (guitar, vocals) and Rafael Martinez (drums), Black Cobra released a self-titled demo EP in 2001, which got them signed to At a Loss Recordings. The label re-released the EP, as well as the band’s 2006 debut LP, Bestial, and 2007’s Feather and Stone. Southern Lord Recordings signed the band for 2009’s Chronomega album and 2011’s Invernal.

Based on that enduring spirit, it’s fair to say that Black Cobra has paid their dues. But then figure in the fact that they are a touring machine, having performed over 700 shows since 2006, then you’ll be asking yourself why these guys aren’t bigger yet. The answer is simple: their music is just too awesome. At times it sounds like Clutch and at others it’s reminiscent of Mudhoney. At the same time, it sounds like nothing else. It’s doomy and sludgy, but it’s visceral and energetic. It’s heavy and dark, but the riffs are fun as hell. You’ll just have to listen for yourself:

Black Cobra are currently in San Francisco working on their next album and preparing for their next tour, which kicks off on August 28th, in Phoenix. See below for the list of dates. Black Cobra will be supported by Lo Pan.
