Last week, the Zuffa owned MMA promotion got ahead of themselves when they announced thatLight Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones (19–1) will square off with No.1 contender Glover Teixeira (22–2) at UFC 169 on Feb. 1, which is UFC’s Super Bowl weekend event.
Today, it’s not the case anymore according to UFC President Dana White, who said on Monday that the P.R. team “f-cked up” on that announcement because it was never a done deal for them in the first place.
In White’s word,
Jones-Teixeira is not happening on Super Bowl (weekend). Our people f–ked up and put that out when they shouldn’t have put that out, because that was never, ever even a done deal. Our P.R. team jumped the gun on that one. It was something that we talked about. I honestly, still to this day, right now, I don’t know how it got released. I don’t know if Joe Silva was sending an email around and somebody took it for, ‘that fight was happening,’ or whatever happened.
A new date for Jones vs. Teixeira hasn’t been issued yet, but is expected to take place sometime in March 2014. The only bout currently scheduled for UFC 169 is a matchup between UFC heavyweights, Frank Mir and.
