Although we only have two more bands to report on at the Heavy Montreal 2014 showing, things definitely didn’t slow down. And the turn out was something to see; I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a turn out at the annual Montreal-based heavy metal festival. If there was ever a heavy metal army in Montreal, it showed up for war tonight.

But before the battle could begin…

7:15 – The Offspring

The Offspring is having a celebration this year, that celebration being the 20th anniversary of Smash. So, what’s to do? How about a full play through of the album? And when that’s done, a smorgasbord of hits. Yes, they played to a packed crowd of fun-loving fans. And they played tight. As good as it was, I still don’t understand why The Offspring was billed over Anthrax at this festival, which is supposed to be more about the metal.

But what the fans were really gathering for was…

8:15 – Metallica

Metallica played their Metallica by Request set, and holy crap was it ever a success. The sound was loud and perfect, the members played tight, and James didn’t sound like a cat getting run over by a car when he had to sing the higher parts of the older songs. And fans and non-fans alike will be happy to know that Lars has a new trick; instead of standing up like a kid with ADD, he colapses on his kit to catch his breath. Yup, it was awesome. Here’s their spectacular set list at Heavy Montreal 2014:

1. Blackened
2. Master of Puppets
3. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
4. Ride the Lightning
5. Kirk solo
6. The Unforgiven
